How To Make Armrest Covers

How to Craft Custom Armrest Covers

Armrests, being subject to constant use, often succumb to wear and tear. Replacing them with new ones can be costly. Fortunately, creating custom armrest covers offers a budget-friendly and stylish solution. Here's a detailed guide to help you achieve professional-looking results:

Materials and Tools

  • Fabric of your choice (consider durability and comfort)
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors
  • Needle and thread or sewing machine
  • Elastic cord or Velcro
  • Optional: Piping cord for a decorative touch

Step 1: Measure the Armrest

Using a measuring tape, accurately determine the dimensions of your armrest. Note the length, width, and height. Add 2-3 inches to each measurement for seam allowances and a snug fit.

Step 2: Cut the Fabric

Fold your fabric in half lengthwise, right sides together. Place the armrest measurement on the folded edge and cut out two rectangles, ensuring they are evenly cut.

Step 3: Sew the Sides

Pin the two fabric pieces right sides together along the long edges. Stitch a straight stitch, leaving a small opening for turning.

Step 4: Insert Elastic Cord or Velcro

Thread an elastic cord or sew Velcro strips around the raw edges of the opening. Secure the ends to prevent the cord or strips from pulling out. This closure method ensures a snug fit on the armrest.

Step 5: Turn Right Side Out and Sew the Opening

Turn the cover right side out and carefully stitch the opening closed using a ladder stitch or whip stitch.

Step 6: Add Piping (Optional)

If desired, cut a length of piping cord to the perimeter of the cover. Pin it along the outer edges and stitch it in place close to the piping cord.

Step 7: Fit the Cover

Place the cover over the armrest, aligning the closure method. Adjust the elastic cord or Velcro for a snug fit. Your custom armrest cover is now complete.

Tips

  • Choose a durable fabric that can withstand wear and tear.
  • Use a thread that matches the fabric color for a seamless look.
  • Iron the fabric before cutting to ensure straight edges and precise measurements.
  • If you're unsure about your sewing skills, consider hand-stitching or using a sewing machine with a beginner-friendly setting.
  • Experiment with different fabrics and colors to create unique and stylish armrest covers.
