How To Make Chair Armrest Covers

How to Create Custom Chair Armrest Covers

Enhance the comfort and aesthetics of your chairs by creating your own armrest covers. This project is not only cost-effective but also allows you to customize the covers to match your décor and personal style. Follow these comprehensive instructions to master the art of making chair armrest covers.

Materials

  • Fabric of your choice (e.g., cotton, linen, velvet)
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread
  • Iron and ironing board
  • Optional: Velcro or elastic (for securing the covers)

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Measure and Cut the Fabric

Use a measuring tape to determine the width and length of the chair armrest. Add a few inches to both measurements for seam allowance. Cut two pieces of fabric according to these measurements.

2. Sew the Sides

Place the two pieces of fabric face to face and pin along the sides. Sew along the pinned edges using a sewing machine or by hand.

3. Make the Arm Opening

Fold one piece of fabric in half lengthwise and press with an iron to create a crease. Place this piece on top of the other, aligning the edges. Measure and mark the center of the chair armrest. Cut a semicircle or rectangle around this mark to create the opening for the arm.

4. Sew the Arm Opening

Fold the edges of the arm opening twice and press with an iron to create hemmed edges. Sew around the opening, attaching it to the other piece of fabric.

5. Secure the Covers (Optional)

If desired, you can add Velcro or elastic to the edges of the covers for a more secure fit. Sew Velcro strips to the inside of the covers and the chair armrests, or create a loop of elastic and attach it to the back of the covers.

Tips

  • Choose fabric that is durable, easy to clean, and complements your décor.
  • Use a zigzag stitch to prevent the edges from fraying.
  • If you don't have a sewing machine, you can use a needle and thread to hand-sew the covers.
  • Experiment with different fabrics, patterns, and embellishments to create unique and stylish covers.
  • Regularly clean the covers to maintain their appearance.

By following these instructions and adding a touch of creativity, you can transform the look and feel of your chairs with custom-made armrest covers that provide both comfort and style.
