Types of Window Alarm Sensors

There are two primary types of window alarm sensors:

Magnetic Contact Sensors: Consist of two parts - a magnet and a switch. When the window is closed, the magnet keeps the switch closed, completing the circuit. Opening the window separates the magnet and switch, breaking the circuit and triggering the alarm.

Glass Break Sensors: Use a microphone to detect the high-frequency sound produced when glass is broken. They are ideal for windows with tempered or laminated glass, which doesn't break into sharp shards and may not trigger magnetic contact sensors.

Choosing the Right Sensors

Consider the type of windows you have when selecting alarm sensors:

Single-Hung Windows: Magnetic contact sensors are suitable for these windows.

Double-Hung Windows: Require sensors on both the upper and lower sashes.

Casement Windows: Magnetic contact sensors can be installed on the frame and casement.

Sliding Windows: Use magnetic contact sensors for vertical sliding windows, and glass break sensors for horizontal sliding windows.

Installation Steps

Step 1: Turn Off Power: If the sensors connect to a wired alarm system, turn off the power to prevent electrical shock.

Step 2: Identify Sensor Locations: Determine the optimal placement of the sensors on the window frame and window sash. Typically, sensors are installed at the top corners of the window.

Step 3: Prepare the Surfaces: Clean the surfaces where the sensors will be mounted to ensure adhesion.

Step 4: Mount the Sensors: For magnetic contact sensors, attach the magnet to the window frame and the switch to the window sash. For glass break sensors, follow the manufacturer's instructions for placement.

Step 5: Connect the Sensors: For wired sensors, connect them to the alarm control panel using the provided cables. For wireless sensors, follow the manufacturer's instructions for pairing them with the alarm hub.

Step 6: Activate the Sensors: Once installed, activate the sensors by following the manufacturer's instructions. This typically involves opening and closing the window to test the sensors.
