How to Make Furniture Arm Covers

Furniture arm covers are a great way to protect your furniture from spills, stains, and wear and tear. They can also be used to update the look of your furniture without having to buy new pieces. Making your own furniture arm covers is a relatively simple project that can be completed in a few hours.

Materials you'll need:

Fabric
Scissors
Measuring tape
Sewing machine
Thread
Elastic cord
Safety pins

Step 1: Measure your furniture arms

To begin, you'll need to measure the length and width of your furniture arms. Be sure to measure the outside edge of the arm, from the top to the bottom. Once you have your measurements, add 2 inches to each side for seam allowance.

Step 2: Cut out the fabric

Cut two pieces of fabric according to your measurements. The pieces should be the same size and shape.

Step 3: Sew the side seams

With right sides together, sew the side seams of the fabric pieces. Use a 1/2-inch seam allowance.

Step 4: Hem the bottom edge

Fold the bottom edge of the fabric up by 1 inch and press. Fold the edge up again by 1 inch and press. Stitch the hem in place.

Step 5: Insert the elastic cord

Cut a piece of elastic cord to the length of the top edge of the arm cover. Thread the elastic cord through the casing at the top of the arm cover. Use a safety pin to help you thread the elastic cord through the casing.

Step 6: Tie the elastic cord

Once the elastic cord is threaded through the casing, tie the ends of the cord together. Be sure to tie the cord tightly so that the arm cover fits snugly on the furniture arm.

Step 7: Try on the arm cover

Put the arm cover on the furniture arm to make sure it fits properly. If the arm cover is too loose, you can tighten the elastic cord. If the arm cover is too tight, you can loosen the elastic cord.
