How to Reupholster a Wingback Chair with Wooden Arms
Wingback chairs are classic and timeless, but recovering one can seem like a daunting task. However, with a little preparation and the right materials, it's entirely possible to reupholster a wingback chair with wooden arms at home. Here's a detailed guide to help you through the process:
Materials You'll Need:
- New upholstery fabric
- Upholstery foam
- Batting
- Staple gun and staples
- Upholstery scissors
- Measuring tape
- Chalk or fabric marker
- Tack strip
- Screwdriver
- Pliers
Step 1: Disassemble the Chair
Start by removing the cushions and any loose parts from the chair. Then, carefully separate the wooden arms from the chair body. Use a screwdriver to unscrew the bolts or screws that hold the arms to the chair.
Step 2: Remove the Old Fabric
Use a staple remover to carefully remove the old fabric from the chair, starting with the seat. Once the seat fabric is removed, remove the fabric from the back and wings.
Step 3: Inspect and Repair the Frame
Once the old fabric is removed, carefully inspect the chair frame for any damage. Repair any broken springs or joints as necessary. Replace any damaged upholstery foam or batting.
Step 4: Upholster the Seat
Lay the new upholstery fabric over the seat cushion and trim the edges, leaving about 6 inches of excess fabric on all sides. Secure the fabric to the seat with staples, starting from the center and working outward.
Step 5: Upholster the Back and Wings
Upholster the back and wings of the chair in the same manner as the seat. Start by securing the fabric to the center of the back and working outward. Make sure to pull the fabric taut and secure it with staples.
Step 6: Install Tack Strip
Cut tack strip to fit around the edges of the chair frame. Use a tack hammer or pliers to secure the tack strip to the frame, spacing the tacks about 1 inch apart.
Step 7: Upholster the Arms
Apply upholstery glue to the wooden arms of the chair. Wrap the new fabric around the arms, starting from the top and working downward. Secure the fabric to the tack strip with staples.
Step 8: Reassemble the Chair
Replace the arms onto the chair body and secure them with bolts or screws. Attach any cushions or loose parts to complete the reupholstery process.
